Hands holding energy

Protection rituals can help you to get rid of unwanted negative energy, which may cause you to feel frustrated, drained, or depressed. Protection rituals can come in a variety of different forms and you don’t even need to follow a set spiritual path to perform them. In this article, let’s look at 9 simple yet powerful rituals that you can do to protect your energy and space.

9 protection rituals

Do you feel that negativity is surrounding you? Then it may be time to perform a protection ritual! Below are 9 protection rituals that you can perform in the privacy of your own home:

1. Protection ritual using crystals

Black tourmaline

When you perform a protection ritual, you are raising energy to create a barrier that will shield you from negative energies. Due to their powerful connection to the earth, crystals can be used to amplify your intentions.

Generally, black crystals such as obsidian or tourmaline, are the best crystals to use because they are known to be able to absorb negativity from the surrounding environment. To protect your home, try setting up a simple protection grid using black tourmaline, here’s how:

Step 1: Firstly, it is a good idea to spend 5-15 minutes grounding yourself with a meditation practice you are comfortable with.

Step 2: Then hold four tourmaline crystals in your hands and raise them to your third eye chakra (between your brows). Visualize your intention for the spell, making sure you feel all the emotions that come with it. At this point, you can say a few words out loud to encompass your intention such as:
I program this crystal grid to protect me from…

Step 3: Once this is done, place your four charged tourmaline crystals in the four corners of your home, ensuring that one is placed by the front door to prevent evil from entering.

2. Protection ritual using smudging

Smudging ritual

Smudging rituals have been used by Shamans and Native American cultures for centuries, to protect a sacred space before performing any ceremonial work. The most commonly used herb for smudging is white sage due to its powerful purification properties. However, other options work just as well such as Palo Santo or Mugwort.

Here’s how:

Simply, light a bundle of your chosen herb and allow the smoke to drift into every corner of your home. You can also use it to cleanse your body. As you are doing this, visualize the smoke clearing away any negativity in your space. If you like, you can chant a mantra or incantation too.

Once the ritual is done, be sure to open a few windows to allow the smoke to drift out, otherwise, the negativity will remain in your home!

3. Protection ritual using salt

Pink Himalayan salt

Salt is an incredibly powerful cleansing substance, especially pink Himalayan salt. To perform a salt cleansing ritual, simply carry a bowl of salt around your home, sprinkling it as you walk.

You can also utilize herbs in your protection spell to enhance its effects. Here’s a simple ritual you can do use salt.

Step 1: To do this, write ‘PROTECTION’ onto a piece of paper and place it into a cauldron or other fireproof bowl. On top of the paper, tip a cup of salt and add dried sprigs of rosemary, dill, and some dried bay leaves.

Step 2: Place your hands over the cauldron and visualize your intentions. Then, when you are ready, burn the concoction.

Step 3: Once they have fully burnt down, use a pestle and mortar to grind them down further, and then place the mixture in a jar and leave it somewhere in your home. This powerful ritual will protect your home the whole year through!

4. Protection ritual during a full moon

Full moon

The full moon is strongly connected to the divine mother Goddess, which makes it a powerful symbol of protection and growth. During a full moon, you can tap into this lunar energy by performing a protection ritual to banish any negativity from your life and bring your aura back into balance.

These rituals can be as simple or as elaborate as you like. Here is a simple version for you to adapt to your own needs:

Step 1: Find a spot where you can sit comfortably and clear the space around you using visualization methods or smudging. You can also invoke the four elements at this stage (earth, air, fire, water).

Step 2: Close your eyes and meditate for a few minutes, focusing your intention on the light of the moon as it washes over you.

Step 3: When you are ready, take a piece of paper and write down anything you want to get rid of. I.e., negative behavior patterns, addictions, or worries, then speak them out loud. As you do this, imagine releasing these feelings into the universe. You can also hold an appropriate crystal in your left hand at this stage, to increase your energy. Stay in this position for as long as you need, to allow the positive energy you have created to engulf you.

5. Protection ritual using trataka meditation

Trataka candle ritual

Trataka is a meditation technique that involves focusing the mind through intense but relaxed gazing. This practice has a Sanskrit origin and is commonly used in Yoga. The technique can be performed in numerous ways. However, perhaps the most common of these (and most popular) is candle gazing but you can use any object that holds personal significance to you.

Gaze at your chosen object without blinking for up to 3 minutes. You may find that your eyes begin to tear so you must be careful in the beginning. Once you have done this, close your eyes and see the object in your mind.

When you have become proficient at this exercise, you can move to the next stage (known as internal gazing). For this one, close your eyes and gaze at a mental object in your mind. This can be anything from a needle to a candle flame.

The final stage is staring into the void. Select two objects close together and try focusing on the negative space between them. It can take a while for you to master this skill but eventually, it will become an incredibly powerful form of protection and self-awareness.

6. Protection ritual using runes

Runes ritual

Elder Futhark Runes (which is the oldest version of the Runes dating from the 1st century to 800CE) have divine powers which makes them perfect to use in divination practices and protection spells. These are a set of 24 Nordic Runes. In Norse mythology these Runes represent the 24 pathways between the 9 worlds that can be used to unlock the mysteries of these worlds. It is important to use your intuition with these runes and let the spirits guide you. It can take a while to learn how to use runes properly and understand the messages they are giving you so be patient and do your research!

Step 1: For this ritual, consider making your own set of runes by drawing them on a flat surface like flat stones or coins. When drawing, be fully present and set an intention so these runes are aligned to your highest good.

Step 2: When you are ready, run your hands over the runes whilst visualizing your predicament, then pick the one that feels right to you. Study the shape and design of your chosen rune. You can even meditate with it by picturing the symbol in your mind and take note of any images that pop up.

Runes are also often carved into particular objects such as coins or worn as protective amulets. The most beneficial runes for protection are Thurisaz, Ingwaz, Eihwaz, Ehwaz, Algiz, and Tiwaz.

7. Protection ritual using sigils/symbols

A sigil is simply a symbol that has been charged with an intention. Various symbols have been used throughout history but perhaps the best ones are the symbols you create for your own purpose. Here’s a simple protection ritual using Sigils:

Step 1: Try sitting with a piece of paper and a pencil, and drawing up your own unique symbol; what do you want it to look like or symbolize?

Step 2: Once you are happy with your drawing, you can carve the symbol onto a candle (white or black work best) and then light it. Sit near the burning flame for as long as you want, and visualize the meaning of the symbol you created. Allow it to surround you with a protective light that will shield you from negativity.

Remember the power in this ritual is all down to your belief that it will work!

8. Protection ritual using candles

Jar candle

Candles have been used single ages for protection spells. Candle rituals can be done using regular candles, tealight candles or jar candles, although jar candles are recommended as they are easier to use. Here’s a simple protection ritual you can do using jar candles (store bought or homemade).

Step 1: Cleanse the candle through smudging and write the words, ‘Protect’, Cleanse, Cleansing, or ‘Protection’ on the candle. If it’s a jar, you can write on the Jar using a marker or if it’s a wax candle, you can carve the words on it.

Step 2: Light the candle and after a few minutes sprinkle a few protective herbs on the top. Some herbs you can use are Sage, Rosemary, Cinnamon, Bay Leaf, Basil, Lavender etc. You can either use these herbs in their dried form or as essential oils. Or even better, you can use both versions at the same time.

Step 3: As you sprinkle these herbs, take a moment to infuse them with your intention which in this case would be protection from negative energy or positive energy.

Step 4: Spend a few minutes meditating and infusing the candle with your intention.

Step 5: Allow the candle to burn for around 30 minutes to an hour (or longer if you wish) before blowing it out. You can light it whenever you sense a need for protection.

9. Protection ritual using herbs

Spell bag

Herbs carry powerful protection energy. Here’s a simple ritual you can perform using herbs.

Step 1: Take a small white pouch bag and some of your favorite protection herbs such as Cinnamon powder/bark, whole clove seeds, dried/fresh basil leaves, bay leaves, burdock root, blueberry thrones, pepper, etc.

Step 2: Start to place a handful of each herb after infusing the herb with your intention.
Setting an intention can be as simple as holding the herb in your hand, closing your eyes and saying a few mantras like, ‘I infuse this herb with powerful protection energy’.
You can infuse each herb one by one or place all of them in a bowl and infuse them that way.

Step 3: Once all your herbs are in the bag, tie it off using a red or black thread. Infuse this bag once again with your intention.

You can now carry this bag with you or place it in a space where you need protective energy.

What day of the week is best to perform protection rituals?

You can perform a protection ritual whenever you feel the need to. However, it is worth noting that different days of the week carry their own unique energy, which may affect the results of any rituals you perform. Below is a breakdown of the different weekdays and their correspondences:

Monday: Best for increasing psychic abilities and any ritual to do with emotions

Tuesday: Best for spells surrounding inner strength, inspiration, and courage

Wednesday: Best for when you need to make a big change in your life or any situation surrounding a lack of communication.

Thursday: Best for all spells to do with money and abundance

Friday: Best day for love and fertility spells

Saturday: Protection, cleansing, and making a fresh start

Sunday: This is the best day to set your intentions for the week ahead and perform any spell to manifest your future goals.

How often should you perform a protection ritual?

Depending on your needs, you can perform protection rituals as often as you like. However, be careful not to overdo it. Any protection ritual is solidified by your intention so you must believe in the tasks you are performing and the words you are speaking.

Often in the movies, spells have an immediate effect however this is not the case in real life! Allow some time for your spell to manifest and try to live with a more positive mindset in the process. Believe in your energy and the power of the universe.

Conclusion

Protection rituals can be powerful aids to assist you in everyday life, to banish negativity and help you get through tough situations. With any protection ritual or spell, it is important for you to do what feels right for you. We all have a power inside us that connects us to the divine which is only activated when we feel balanced and are true to ourselves.
